Black Australorp Chickens
Possibly the most proficient egg-laying chicken ever developed is the Black Australorp Chicken. Her production records out rank the Leghorn, but because of her meaty size, she is classified as a dual purpose fowl. This makes her the backyard poultry of choice, especially combined with the breed’s loyalty and quiet nature.
Bluebird Farm & Horse Ranch has a modest flock that can produce more eggs than a five member family can consume. Thus, eggs are available for purchase on occasion. For the record: during the early 1920’s a team of six Black Australorp hens layed 1,857 eggs in 365 days, or approximately 309.5 eggs per hen. This was during an era when artificial lighting was not available. The world’s record for egg production by one hen goes to a Black Australorp in Australia which produced 364 eggs in 365 days.
Black Australorps will lay throughout the winter without artificial lighting, and do not wander far if allowed to free roam. They are hardy and can survive the cold, Idaho winters with a small henhouse and an open pen. Cock birds weigh approximately 8.5 pounds, and hens are about 6.5 pounds. The average egg production is 250 light-brown eggs per year without artificial lighting.
Check with us in the spring, we may have chicks and/or new pullets for sale. Eggs are typically sold for $2 per dozen. Please email or call for availability.
