The Other Hunting

The horses of Bluebird Farm & Horse Ranch are also exposed to the sport of hunting – elk hunting that is!  Owners Pete and Annie Bowes are avid big game hunters and usually purchase the sportsman’s package every year.  During the fall of 2005 Pete’s daughter Chelsey harvested her first buck and she is pictured below.

Annie started her hunting career early: at thirteen she harvested a world class caribou at her family’s hunting lodge in Alaska.  Annie has also experienced hunting and fishing in Massachusetts, Maine, Oregon, the Philippine Islands (her father was a missionary during her teenage years), California, Montana, and currently Idaho where she makes her home.  When she was a child she also lived in Washington DC where her father served as a Presidential Marine Corp Honor Guard.

It is supposed that the hunting trait is genetic since her Great Grandfather, Fred Lee Wicks (pictured below), was a skilled hunter of cougars.  He also harvested bear and deer, raised turkeys and served as a Federal Marshal to feed his family.  Times were tough on the Indian Reservation, but he managed to provide a decent standard of living.

As an adolescent, Annie cherished the stories he told her of running hounds, packing into the wilderness on horseback, and his time spent on the Mojave Desert in California.  He had many favorite dogs, horses, and hunting adventures.

Annie hopes to make her own set of adventures while looking for mule deer, whitetail deer, moose, bear, and elk in north Idaho and eastern Montana.

Pete is teaching his son Adam and Adam's Labrador - Zeke - how to hunt pheasant, duck, and whitetail deer shed antlers.  Camping in the wilderness and looking for whitetail bucks are Pete’s favorite pastimes, along with fishing in the local lakes and four wheeling.  Maybe we’ll see you out there enjoying the serenity of north Idaho!
