What’s New
Wildlife
Hunting season in 2010 was uneventful. Many small bucks were seen and allowed to grow larger for next year. And, of course, many good bull moose and elk were seen when no tag or season was available for harvest!
Bottle Babies Over the course of the summer, owner Annie Bowes took in 18 bottle baby kittens are adopted them out when they reached eight weeks of age. Luckily, not all the kittens were abandoned at the same time, and most litters consisted of only three or four kittens. A single female, a fluffy Siamese, was kept for replacement in the barn cat population at Bluebird Farm & Horse Ranch. 20 Piglets! Our two patient sows produced 20 piglets at their first breeding! One sow was bred to a Berkshire and produced mostly spotted piglets (pictured above under the heat light), the other was bred to a Durok and produced many belted red piglets. Thanks to all our farm clients, every one of the piglets were sold before weaning. Longhorn Calf Our beautiful black heifer gave us a very unusually marked bull calf this summer. He is tiny and sweet and it is hoped he can grow a few years and produce beautiful horns before he is demoted to beef.
More Beef! Raising cattle is a staple of Bluebird Farm & Horse Ranch, and when the opportunity to acquire another steer came along, the farm welcomed "Charlie," a charolais cross. Charlie will grow out for the summer and then be offered for sale by hanging weight in the fall. If you are interested in purchasing half a beef that has been completely pasture raised, please contact Annie Bowes at (208) 659-6825 to get on the list.
Another Barn Kitty! Bluebird Farm & Horse Ranch takes
in a lot of orphans and strays, and this year “Jack” is our first new
member. He had an infection in his toe, but has recovered well and gets
along great with all of the other farm animals. He is friendly and
fluffy, just like the rest of them!
